October Reset: Thirty Days, One Repair, Twenty Applications

A new month is a useful excuse to stop repeating a process that is not working. The whole plan fits on one page and costs nothing.

A new month is not magic. It is just a convenient place to stop repeating something that is not working.

If September produced effort and not much else, here is the whole of October on one page.

Days 1–3: measure

Write the ledger: your last twenty applications, one row each — date, company, where you found it, were you actually eligible, did you tailor it, any reply, how far it went.

Then count the eligible ones. Most people discover the number is five or six out of twenty, which means every conclusion they drew about themselves last month was calculated against the wrong denominator.

Finish with the free instruments: Capacity Audit, diagnostic, CV self-scan. Three ninety-second tools, no cost, no email.

Days 4–10: repair one thing

The earliest broken part, and nothing else. Capacity first if the audit said so; otherwise supply, representation, aim or conversion in that order.

Write down what “done” means before you start. “Improve my CV” is not a task. “Every bullet rewritten as work performed, with a number I can defend, in one column, passing the plain-text test” is a task, and you will know when it is finished.

Days 11–24: twenty aimed applications

Twenty. Not two hundred. Each one eligible on location, authorisation and overlap. Each one tailored to the words in the advert. Each one logged.

Roughly two a day with weekends off. It will feel too slow. It is not: the previous approach produced volume and silence, and the point of this fortnight is to produce data you can read.

Days 25–30: read the result

Compare the new twenty with the old twenty on one number: the share that produced any human response at all.

If it improved, the repair was right. Do the same again in November, one rung further down the pipeline.

If it did not, you repaired the wrong part — and you know that now, in thirty days, instead of in June.

The rule that makes it work

One repair per cycle. The reason is not discipline for its own sake: if you change your CV, your sourcing, your targeting and your outreach in the same fortnight, and the numbers move, you have learned nothing about which change mattered.

Change one thing. Measure. Then change the next one.

That is the entire method, and it is the same one whether you run it alone from this page, from the book at ₦15,000, or in a cohort with someone marking the work.
