What Goes on a CV When You Have Never Held a Remote Job

Employers hiring across borders are not looking for remote experience. They are pricing three specific risks, and all three can be evidenced from a job you did in an office.

The most common sentence we hear from people who have never worked remotely is that they cannot get a remote job because they have never had one. It is a real barrier and also a misreading of what the employer is doing.

Nobody is scanning for the phrase remote experience. They are assessing three risks, and every one can be evidenced from work you did in an office in Lagos or Abuja.

Risk one: unsupervised output

Will work happen when nobody can see you doing it? An office job answers this constantly and never writes it down.

The proof is any work you owned end to end where the deadline was external and nobody checked your progress daily. A monthly report produced alone. A reconciliation nobody reviewed until it was finished. A client account you ran. Write it as an outcome with a period attached: what you produced, how often, over how long, and what the number was before you.

Risk two: the communication gap

Can you be understood in writing by someone who cannot ask a follow-up question until tomorrow morning?

The proof here is not a claim, it is an artefact. A process document you wrote that somebody else used. A handover note. An email format you introduced. A training guide. If you have never written one, write one this week for something you already know how to do. That is a real artefact, made honestly, and it is now evidence.

Risk three: durability

Will you still be there in month eleven? Cross-border hires are expensive to set up and the cost of a bad one lands on the person who decided.

The proof is tenure, progression inside one place, or a clear reason for each move. Three jobs in two years with no explanation is a risk. Three jobs in two years with one line each is a story.

Three sentences, not a new career

  • One outcome you produced alone, with a number and a timeframe.
  • One written artefact somebody else used without you explaining it.
  • One clear account of your last two moves.

That is what international experience means at entry to this market. Three proofs, not a history.

What to remove while you are in there

The same document usually carries six things that cost you and gain nothing on a cross-border application: a photograph, date of birth, marital status, state of origin, references available on request, and an objective statement about what you want. Delete all six. Ten minutes, and on a US or UK application a photograph alone can get a file set aside.

The honest limit

None of this manufactures experience you do not have. If a role genuinely needs five years of something you have done for one, this will not close it and we will not pretend otherwise. What it closes is the far more common gap: a person with the actual competence whose document never says so, because it was written in the local dialect of accomplishment and read by someone in another market.
