Six Months of Applying, Almost Nothing Back: The Ninety-Day Reset

Forty applications a month. Six months. Almost nothing back.

The person in that sentence is not lazy. They are working hard at a system with a leak in it, and the hardest thing to accept is that more of the same effort makes the silence louder rather than shorter.

Week one: stop applying

Not forever. For seven days. Applying is what makes the situation feel survivable, which is exactly why it prevents the diagnosis. You cannot read your own results while you are adding to them.

Instead, sort your last twenty applications into four columns: could not legally have paid you, wrong level for you, could have hired you and did not, and genuinely well aimed. Count the last column.

Most people find five or six out of twenty, which means their reply rate was calculated against the wrong denominator for six months and the picture they had of themselves was arithmetically wrong.

The four things that can be broken

• Supply. You cannot apply for a job you never saw. This one fails invisibly. There is no rejection email for a role that was never in front of you.
• Representation. If your CV cannot be read, you were never really in the running. This produces silence, not rejection.
• Aim. Applying everywhere is not the same as applying where you would get hired. This produces polite, fast rejections.
• Conversion. Interviews do not pay you. A signed offer does. This produces final-round losses and is the most demoralising, because it looks like the others.

They fail in order, which means fixing a later one while an earlier one is broken buys you nothing. A better job feed just gives a broken CV more chances to be filtered out unread.

Weeks two to four: repair exactly one

Supply is free to fix and takes about a week: twenty verified companies whose careers pages you check weekly, replacing the daily scroll with one weekly hour.

Representation is a weekend: the plain-text test, the header fix, the six deletions, the four-sentence summary, and every bullet rewritten as an outcome with a number and a period.

Aim cannot be fixed quickly, because it is research and it decays every quarter. Thirty companies in three tiers, checked for whether they can actually pay someone in your country, is ten to fifteen hours. That is an hours problem, not a knowledge problem, and it is worth knowing which of the two you have.

Conversion is the one you cannot fix by reading, because the fault is something you cannot observe about yourself.

Weeks five to twelve: apply against the repair

Twenty aimed applications, ledgered, over eight weeks. Then read the ledger rather than your feelings. If the silence rate has fallen, the repair was correct. If it has not, you repaired the wrong point, and now you know that in eight weeks rather than another six months.
